On May 31, 2000, Monsanto, a chemical plant, was forced to remove their sediments because it had high levels of PCBs. Dead Creek, which was contaminated, was put on a National Priority list. It was said that the waste was dangerous to endangered species and the state.
Korea Zinc Co. Ltd., Big River Zince was placed in East St. Louis to escape property taxes. The company sells about 92,000 tons of zinc, 130,000 tons of commercial grade sulfuric acid, and 1,000 tons of cadmium oxide per year. 1996 Big River set up an Improvement Program, according their website their new system purifies water before it leaves the plant. They also state they now use safe disposal, in accordance with the state and federal laws.

In 2007 the U.S. appropriated 1 billion dollars for education programs in the U.S. Included in the list of projects was to improve the technology and science facilities in East Saint Louis High School.
